Thermometers and barometers will be banned: a list of prohibited products with mercury additives exported from Armenia and imported into Armenia will be established

RA Environment Ministry proposes to define the list of products with mercury additives that are prohibited to be exported from the Republic of Armenia and imported into the Republic of Armenia. The draft law "On defining the list of products with mercury additive prohibited for export from the Republic of Armenia and import to the Republic of Armenia" was put into circulation on E-draft.am.

The purpose of the adoption of the draft law is to fulfill the obligations assumed by the Minamata Convention on Mercury ratified by the Republic of Armenia in 2017 and to protect human health and the environment from the harmful effects of products containing mercury and mercury compounds. The draft envisages establishing exceptions for products with mercury additives prohibited for import or export, if they are necessary for the purposes of civil defense, military, research (including medical), testing, calibration of devices and use as a reference sample (standard).

By imposing a ban on the import and export of mercury-containing products, it is planned to phase out these products from circulation, gradually transitioning to the use of existing alternatives to these products, which do not contain mercury or other dangerous substances in their composition.
