Biodiversity and Biosecurity Problem Council of National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia Tabled Recommendations to Governmental Bodies Regarding Restoration of Lake Sevan Ecosystem

Biodiversity and Biosafety Problem Council of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia has tabled a set of recommendations to the state structures regarding the restoration of the Lake Sevan ecosystem.

  1. Limit water intake from Lake Sevan to the amount set by theArmenian government. Accelerate the construction of reservoirs to regulate water intake.
  2. Take measures to reduce the loss of irrigation water.
  3. To reduce or prevent the penetration of biogenic substances into the lake through the communal-household discharges of the settlements of the catchment basin, which is possible to implement by the construction and operation of biological wastewater treatment plants at least in large settlements.
  4. Limit the penetration of biogenic substances from the recreation areas into the lake by establishing strict control over emissions from the above sources.
  5. Gradually reduce the transition of biogenic substances from the bottom sediments to the water environment by ensuring a steady increase in the water level and restoration of the hypolimnion protective layer.
  6. To support the studies of hydropower plants: small hydropower plants, considered environmentally friendly, can cause damage at the local level. Being built on a river that is a spawning ground for fish, the small hydropower plant contributes to the increase of water temperature in that region, the acceleration of the flow, which disrupts both the spawning process and the food base of the fish.
  7. Prevent or reduce in-lake biological processes, particularly pollution caused by disruption of the food chain, by restoring crustacean and fish stocks.
  8. Ban the breeding of foreign fish species in the basin of Lake Sevan.
  9. Tighten theprovisions of the fishingpermit, because the commercial whitefish and especially the crayfish have decreased due to irregular hunting.
  10. To draw up a strategy for the further development of Lake Sevan, in which the ratio of different directions should be scientificallysubstantiated: Lake Sevan as a unique source of fresh water, a recreation zone and a place for fish industry.
