"EcoLur" Informational NGO received an alert from Gyumri residents that the underpass of the Gyumri river, a tributary of Akhuryan, is in danger of collapsing, which could have disastrous consequences for the town.
According to the residents, when the river overflowed, the city center was filled with mud, even the carriages could not pass. For that reason, a six-meter-wide, four-meter-high and 900-meter-long Gyumri river underpass was built with public funds in 1907 to prevent the river from flooding. It has become Gyumri's side road and garbage collector: the residents throw garbage into the river, there is no collector in the entire district on the left bank of Gyumri, all the waste water flows into the river through all the sewage lines. The highway passes through the old historical center of Gyumri, the central square, and past the churches.
Now the subway is filled with garbage, the walls are decayed. In some areas, the side walls of the subway have been destroyed, but the top cover is left hanging in the air. "If there was a collapse, a large part of the central, historical part of the city would be covered with water. It is necessary to completely reconstruct the underground road, clean it from garbage," the residents noted. They mentioned that the Gyumri community administration is not able to solve the problem alone.
EcoLur sent this alarm signal to RA Ministry of Internal Affairs and asked to inform the NGO about the Ministry's measures aimed at solving the problem.
