On March 21, 2025, at 05:03:21 local time (UTC 01:03:21), an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.0 and a focal depth of 10 km was recorded in the territory of the Republic of Armenia. The geographical coordinates of the earthquake's epicenter are latitude 40.9220°N and longitude 44.1890°E.
The earthquake was registered by the Armenian-Chinese automated seismo-geodynamic system, which has been in operation since the beginning of 2025 at the Institute of Geophysics and Engineering Seismology named after A. Nazarov of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia (NAS RA).
The epicenter of this earthquake is within the same epicentral zone as the M=5.2 earthquake recorded on March 8, located near Shenavan-Gogaran settlements. The new earthquake's epicenter is approximately 9 km southwest of the previous one and is considered an aftershock of the March 8 event.
The estimated magnitude of the earthquake fully corresponds to the maximum expected aftershock magnitude, confirming the prediction issued by the Institute of Geophysics and Engineering Seismology in its previous report on the March 8 earthquake.
