Needs of Water Fauna Not Taken into Consideration in SHPP Projecting and Development

The needs of the water fauna are mainly not taken into consideration in the process of SHPP projecting and development, as the National Action Plan on Conservation, Protection, Reproduction and Use of Biodiversity for 2016-2020 says, which the Armenian Government approved on December.

According to this document, the SHPPs constructed on the rivers considered as the spawning sites mainly don't have fish passways and fish-protecting structures compliant with the standards, which directly endangers the existence of the mature fish species, which flow up the river to reach the spawning sites. Besides, some SHPPs don't follow the set amounts of environmental flows in the rivers, which aslo leads to the degradation of the river ecosystem.

The material was  developed in the frames of “Supporting reforms in the sector of small hydro power plants through enabling a dialogue between civil society  and the Ministry  of Nature Protection for sustainable use of river ecosystems” supported by UNDP/GEF Small Grants Programme".
