According to the list presented by the Blacksmith Institute, Azerbaijan is in the top ten list of the world’s most polluted places. In 2008 out of 215 capitals Baku was recognized as the worst polluted city in the world, according to Mercer Human Resource Consulting (MHRC). According to Reza Pourgholam, Head of the Caspian Sea Ecological Research Institute, 95% of the Caspian pollution is the result of coastal countries in the north and northwest of the sea, among them Azerbaijan with its oil mining industry. Iran is responsible for 5% of the Caspian pollution due to dumping of agricultural wastes and detergents, as well.
