The mining industry in Lori Region is still far from being sufficient despite the increase in mining, processing and production indicators. The current mining indicators account for 7-8% of the USSR indicators, as the Socio-economic development program of Lori Region for 2014-2017 says.
Under this source, as of 1 June 2013 around 50 organizations have right to mining in the region territory, out of which 5 organizations develop metallic mines – Alaverdi, Shamlukh copper mines, Mghart and Armanis gold-polymetallic mines, Teghout copper and molybdenum mine is planned to be developed.
Lori Region, which is considered to be the second in the republic for mining, is outlined with gold, molybdenum, copper and polymetallic mines, which are developed or are planned to be developed, and activation of geological prospecting of new metallic mines.
The weak points of the field are as follows: out-of-date technologies for mine dressing, smelting, processing and worn out equipment.
Eleven proposals were made in the program to regulate the mining in the region, out of which the following is noteworthy: “Taking into consideration the poor state of forest-covered territories, to ban definitely any geological prospecting or mining in the area, if it’s not within priority interests of state strategy…”
