Toys with the unknown composition are being sold in the Armenian market, which can endanger children's health, as Knarik Grigoryan, “Armenian Women for Health and Healthy Environment” (AWHHE) NGO, said at the roundtable discussion, held at the “EcoLur” Press Club on February 22, 2019.
'In 2016, our organization carried out lab examinations and detected phthalates, hazardous substances, in the Armenian market of toys. As a specialist, I can claim if the toy is flexible and contains plastics, vinyl, PVC, they also contain phthalates. Young women and children are most vulnerable to phthalates exposure. Children under the age of three are more at risk from phthalates because of their smaller body size and the habit of putting objects into their mouths. Under certain conditions of use and storage, phthalates can be released from products and penetrate the human body leading to severe and irreversible effects for immune, nervous, hormonal and reproductive systems. Phthalates are considered as a probable carcinogen,' Knarik Grigoryan said.
It should be mentioned that in December 2018 “Armenian Women for Health and Healthy Environment” NGO examine labels of 56 toys in 9 sales points in Arabkir, Nor Nork and Kentron communities and found out that 91% of the toys have been imported from China. In the case of 78.6% of toys, the names of the substances used in toys are not mentioned in the labels.
For the purpose of solving this problem, “Armenian Women for Health and Healthy Environment” NGO is proposing to the Armenian Government:
· To expand the list of limitations and bans,
· To enhance inspection control over companies producing and importing toys,
· To mark the composition of the goods on the label.
