EcoLur Joins Newly Established International Scientific and Public Environmental Council of EAEU Member States

The International Scientific and Public Environmental Council of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) member states has been established in Moscow. On December 16-17, during the inaugural conference of the council held in Moscow, the Council convened its first session, bringing together representatives from scientific, educational, and public organizations from Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.

The Armenian delegation included Ashot Saghyan, President of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia (NAS RA), Georgi Fayvush, Head of Geobotany and Ecological Physiology Department of Armen Takhtajyan Institute of Botany of NAS RA, Gor Gevorgyan, Deputy Director of Scientific Center for Zoology and Hydroecology of NAS RA, Karen Ghazaryan, Dean of Biology Faculty of at Yerevan State University, Kristina Ter-Matevosyan, Journalist at “EcoLur” Informational NGO.

In his welcoming remarks during Council’s first session, Ashot Saghyan emphasized: “Every decision we make impacts the environment, both at the national and global levels. It is essential not only to highlight our achievements but also to identify directions for future collaboration. Together, we will create conditions for advanced solutions and improve quality of life. We are confident that our cooperation will serve as a foundation for scientific progress and environmental well-being. Let us strive together to create a sustainable future for our countries and the world.”

Saghyan proposed electing Alexander Kilchevsky, Vice President of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, as the council’s chairperson, stating:
“Alexander Vladimirovich Kilchevsky is a vivid representative of the synergy between Soviet fundamental science and contemporary scientific demands. I know him as a responsible and active individual. I urge everyone to support his candidacy.”

The council members unanimously approved Saghyan’s proposal, appointing Alexander Kilchevsky as chairperson for a one-year term.

Kilchevsky noted, “Our Council aims to establish a stable scientific and technical platform, develop joint initiatives for environmental protection, and strengthen scientific collaboration among our countries.” He added that an executive committee would be formed soon, and an action plan for 2025 would be drafted.

The establishment of the International Scientific and Public Environmental Council aims to create effective mechanisms for addressing current ecological challenges in the region and globally.

The council’s activities will focus on:

  • Tackling climate change;
  • Preventing ecosystem loss;
  • Addressing environmental damage restoration;
  • Issues related to water usage, land management, and resource extraction;
  • Ensuring air quality;
  • Promoting the integration of digital technologies into ecological projects.

During the conference preceding Council’s session, representatives from scientific, educational, and public sectors of member states presented the environmental challenges in their countries, innovative solutions for addressing these issues, eco-focused components in educational systems, and experiences of involving youth in environmental campaigns.
