Government Hurrying to Receive Money for Sevan

On 19 December the Armenian Government approved Complex Program for Recovery of Trout Reserves and Fish Breeding in Lake Sevan” and passed a decision to submit the project for environmental and economic expertise. Meanwhile, the Government simultaneously approved establishing the Fund for developing this project and approved the members of Trustees Board (read EcoLur’s news http://ecolur.org/en/news/officials/project-of-making-lake-sevan-into-fish-breeding-farm-submitted-for-expertise/5652/) without awaiting its results. As it was expected, the project authors’ promise to allot 23 billion AMD to the Fund to be established closes eyes on obvious risks of the program. The business is willing to allot these funds in case it’s allowed to make trout production in Lake Sevan up to 50,000 tons per year. The fish production will be carried out with nurse ponds, where the weight of the fish increases due to artificial forage, which also contains such water pollutants as nitrogen and phosphorus. That is, 50,000 tons of forage will annually be thrown into Lake Sevan for the production of 50,000 tons of fish.

Taking into consideration this factor “S.O.S. Sevan” public movement was launched in parallel with the government resolution initiated by the Public Environmental alliance. The statement on behalf of the public is open for signatures up to 24 December (see the text of the statement http://ecolur.org/en/news/sevan/public-environmental-alliance-to-all-wanting-to-make-sevan-into-fish-breeding-farm/5653/). On 25 December the statement will be handed to the Armenian President, parliamentary factions and the parliament.
