Developing Economy At Expense of Ecology

At the 10th convention of Yerkrapah Volunteers Union on 15 February the Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan replied to the delegate’s question how the economy will be developed. We will outline two extracts from his speech, “….I think everything will be fine, really fine…Because we have determined…In 2014 we will accomplish a large project worker on for many years…It will enable producing 80,000-100,000 tons of copper concentrate, which is a critical amount allowing to produce sulfuric acid, i.e. we will have a significant increase in the mining industry…In 2014 another project will launch – a large complex of fish farms in Gegharkounik Region, where by 2019 we will get 50,000 tons of trout boosting trade circulation and working places…”

Reminder: in case of the copper smelting plant, it’s about Teghout project run by Vallex Group, which has launched the second stage and accomplishes the construction of infrastructures in 2014. Many times Vallex Group assured that the filters at Alaverdi copper smelting plant can operate at high volumes of production, which Teghout copper and molybdenum mine can ensure.

In the second case, it’s about the complex program on fish breeding in Lake Sevan, where the environmental expertise procedure hasn’t been finished yet. The public have made statements several times, which prove the unlawfulness of this project pointing out the contradictions to RA Law “On Lake Sevan” and its harm for the entire lake ecosystem. The scientific grounds of the expected risks are presented, as the risks may become uncontrollable. After the public hearings EcoLur and other participants received a reply from Nature Protection Ministry that their remarks will be taken into consideration when making a conclusion. Nevertheless, it’s hard to imagine that the expertise can issue a negative opinion to a project supported by the president at political level. It’s hard to imagine that the Committee on Lake Sevan Issues by the Armenian President will issue a negative opinion. We should just guess why the project should undergo environmental expertise, if it’s just a show hot to legalize an unlawful project.
