On 25 March “Sustainable Mining” international conference will be held in Yerevan organized by the Armenian government with the support of the World Bank, EBRD, US, UK and German Embassies, Canadian Government, as well as mining companies in Mariott Hotel, Yerevan. In parallel with this conference the public will hold “Unsustainable Mining” alternative conference. “We will organize an alternative conference near Mariott Hotel called “Unsustainable Mining” in reply to the “Sustainable Mining” conference held in Mariott. We will present our complaint to the organizers and voice the problems, which won’t be covered during the conference and in general, as it’s not within the interests of the organizers,” said “Teghout Supporters” civic initiative member Lena Nazaryan at the press conference held at EcoLur Press Club on 24 March. “Teghout Supporters” civic initiative members called the police to ensure organizing the alternative conference without any obstacles. “As of today, Armenia has over two dozen tailing dumps, where ores full of heavy and toxic metals are accumulated. If these heavy metals and toxic elements are extracted thoroughly, the tails become safe, if not, they become toxic,” said Hrachya Avagyan.
