The negative impact of climate change is visible on Lake Sevan ecosystem. As the temperature rises, the volume of river flows to the lake decreases, evaporation increases, the lake blooms, the level decreases day by day. As of January 8, 2021, the level of Lake Sevan was 1900.52 m, then the level of the lake rose to 1900.91 m, then began to fall. It has already dropped by 16 cm.
As of July 19, 2021, the level of Lake Sevan was 1900.75 m, which is 3 cm (1900.78 m) lower than the index of the same day in 2020, and 6 cm (1900.81 compared to July 19, 2019). The level of the lake is lower than in the previous two years, despite the fact that a lot of water has flowed into Lake Sevan from the water intake. Since the beginning of the year, 129.686 million cubic meters of water have flowed into the lake through the Arpa-Sevan water pipeline. As of May 25, 119.182 million cubic meters of water have been released from the lake for irrigation.
It should be reminded that RA law "On approving the annual and complex programs of measures for ecosystem restoration, preservation, reproduction and use of Lake Sevan" envisages raising the level of the lake by about 21.6 cm per year.
Even calculations were made, which predicted an increase in the volume of water in 30 years by about 8.8 billion m3, which is equivalent to a rise of 6.5 m in the lake level by 1903.5 m by 2030. But we still can't reach the 1901m mark.
It should be noted that according to the 4th National Climate Change Communication, the river flow into Lake Sevan is projected to decrease by about 30-35% in 2100, which will have a negative impact on the vital resources in the lake.
