

A new UNDP-GEF project on "Conservation and Sustainable Management of Land Resources and High Value Ecosystems in Lake Sevan Basin for Multiple Benefits" is expected to kick off in 2023. The project induction workshop was held on 22 July.
The grant budget of the project makes up about 3.6 million USD with co-financing of 26.5 million USD. The project will last for 5 years and is expected to start in January 2023 and finish at the end of 2027.
The target communities of the project are Martuni, Vardenis, Shoghakat, Yeghegis, Vayq, and Jermuk consolidated communities in Gegharkunik and Vayots Dzor Regions.
According to Monika Moldovani, a GEF project development specialist, the project stipulates:
· Promoting Land Degradation Neutrality in Lake Sevan Basin landscape to ensure productivity and ecological landscape resilience;
· Securing critical habitats for Biodiversity Services as a baseline for non-deterioration of ecosystem services within Lake Sevan Basin landscape;
· Promoting sustainable and biodiversity friendly economic development and incentives for local communities;
· Knowledge management and learning
· Monitoring and evaluation
The project will be implemented by "Environmental Project Implementation Unit" State Establishment of RA Environment Ministry in cooperation with World Wildlife Fund Armenia. UNDP will monitor project compliance with GEF and UNDP requirements and procedures.
