Workshop on the Land Cover and Anthropogenic Pressure Mapping for Lake Sevan Basin on Example of Gavar Community

GAVAR, ARMENIA - On September 6, 2022, the workshop on land cover and anthropogenic pressure mapping for lake Sevan basin was held in the Gegharkunik Regional Administration. The workshop was organized by "Women in Climate and Energy" NGO in the framework of the European Union and German Government funded "Environmental Protection of Lake Sevan" (EU4Sevan) project. The representatives from Gegharkunik Regional Administration, 15 settlements of Gavar enlarged community, and civil society participated in the workshop, who also contributed to the completion of the result.

During the workshop, the maps of land cover and anthropogenic pressure hotspots based on satellite images and field studies prepared by the research team of the "Women in Climate and Energy" NGO were presented to the participants. After the workshop, practical work was held in a participatory method, during which the representatives of the Gavar community together with NGO and project team representatives reviewed the cartographic materials, identified the gaps and made recommendations. Developed maps and tables will be sent by email to the representatives of settlements for final review and additions.

The goal of this activity implemented in the framework of the EU4Sevan project is to obtain spatial data on land cover characteristics and anthropogenic pressures on surface and groundwater resources in order to better understand the interactions between social, economic and environmental aspects in the Lake Sevan basin. This data will support the more effective planning and implementation of the activities conducted within the framework of the EU4Sevan project, as well as the measures defined by the Sevan Basin Management Plan.

The workshop was concluded with questions and answers, followed by a group discussion on the issues of participatory water resources management, next steps and ways of cooperating.

The “Environmental Protection of Lake Sevan” EU4Sevan project is co-funded by the European Union and the German Government and is implemented by GIZ as a part of the ECOserve Programme and UNDP.
