Piloting of Model Device Cleaning Water from Cyanobacteria in Lake Sevan Gave Positive Outcomes

With the support of the State Science Committee of RA Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, the works of "Researching the mechanisms of eutrophication of Lake Sevan, identifying the phenomenon of "blooming" and developing methods to combat it" project were launched in 2020 with the involvement of Scientific Center for Zoology and Hydroecology of NAS RA, Institute of Geology of NAS RA, Department of Genetics and Cytology of the Faculty of Biology of Yerevan State University, as well as the employees of "Biomineral" LLC. The scientific leader of the project is Bardukh Gabrielyan, Doctor of Biological Sciences. "Our studies of phytoplankton coexistence showed that the "blooming" in Lake Sevan is mainly caused by cyanobacteria of Dolichospermum/Anabaena flos-aquae species.

Anabaena flos-aquae heterocysts were also found in the samples of the lake observation point, the number of which equaled to about 500,000 cells per liter. After water purification with activated zeolites, cells or heterocysts of Anabaena flos-aquae type of algae were not found in the water of the lake," said Dr. Bardukh Gabrielyan, Scientific Director of the Center of Zoology and Hydroecology of of NAS RA. Within the framework of the project, a model device for cleaning lake water from cyanobacteria was created, its design was developed by the employees of the Southern Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences. A group of scientists tested a model device for cleaning Sevan water from blue-green algae, cyanobacteria, in Lake Sevan. With the help of zeolites, harmful microorganisms, microalgae, and cyanobacteria were absorbed from Lake Sevan in the Lichq area using a model device. The test was carried out in July 2022 during the "blooming" phenomenon of Lake Sevan.
