On November 13, the official ceremony of signing the agreement on establishing the "Soil and Water Analysis" laboratory was held in Gavar Municipality. The agreement was signed by the mayor of Gavar, Gurgen Maritirosyan, and by the GIZ Armenia, ECOserve Programme Manager Christian Henschel.
The laboratory will be established with the support of Gavar Municipality and ECOserve Environment Programme, implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
Unilateral use of mineral fertilizers in the Gegharkunik region leads to the decline of soil quality, especially to the reduction of nitrogen assimilation by plants, as a result of which chemical substances together with surface waters are filled into catchment basins, in this case into Lake Sevan basin.
Uncoordinated nutrition with nitrogen fertilizers leads to the accumulation of harmful substances in cultivated plants, which in turn poses a threat to human health. Farmers are not very well acknowledged of soil and plant nutrient requirements and very often apply mineral fertilizers. Checking the nutrients in the soil is important from the point of view of effective application of the necessary fertilizers for the plant, which will ensure obtaining a quality and healthy crop, and will foster the process of reducing the pollution of the environment and especially water. Soil nutrient management will increase agricultural efficiency and improve soil quality.
The laboratory will operate under the authority of the Gavar municipality.
