Only Perspective Source of Drinking Water Supply in Central Armenia at Peril: What Steps RA Government Taking?

The ongoing depletion of groundwater in the Ararat artesian basin will lead to a global environmental and socio-economic disaster in a very short period of time. In order to prevent the disaster, the Ministry of the Environment of the Republic of Armenia has developed draft laws. They were approved by the relevant decision of the RA government on November 9.

The rationale of the resolution specifically highlights that "the underground waters of the Ararat artesian basin are the only prospective source of drinking water supply in Central Armenia. All springs are used for drinking water supply, so the level of public danger of overexploitation of the Ararat artesian basin is very high, which is why this regulation is necessary and urgent."

According to the legislative amendment, it is planned to install a closed circulating water saving system in the fish farming farms in the Ararat Valley. It will ensure that at least 40% of the effluent from the fish farm is reused in the same ponds of the same fish farm after treatment. From the well, the fish farm must take water in the maximum amount of 60% of the water intake volume defined by the water use permit. Failure by fish farms without this system will result in fines to citizens.
