"During the intensified measures carried out from November 15, 2024, to January 20, 2025, a total of 2,784 kg of whitefish was confiscated, with the damage amounting to 12,844,000 AMD. Additionally, 61 watercraft, 119 crayfish traps, and 908 fishing nets were seized," said Vrezh Galoyan, Deputy Head of the RA Environmental Protection and Mining Inspection Body, during a press conference held on January 21 of this year.

He noted that, compared to the previous year, the number of detected illegal fishing cases remained nearly the same; however, this year, the confiscations were made directly within Lake Sevan’s territory rather than in markets. The illegally caught fish were handed over to special care centers as well as wildlife conservation sites.

Regarding illegal fishing, 25 criminal cases and 72 administrative proceedings have been initiated. According to the RA Code on Administrative Offenses, fines for illegal whitefish fishing range from 300,000–400,000 AMD for individuals and 500,000–600,000 AMD for legal entities.

According to Artush Ghukasyan, Head of the Gegharkunik Regional Division of the Environmental Protection and Mining Inspection Body, fishermen were informed about the intensified control measures and upcoming administrative actions during meetings.

"By November 15, most watercraft had been removed. Any remaining vessels left by fishermen were relocated to protected areas by eco-patrols and inspection authorities to facilitate further administrative procedures," he said.
