Ahead of the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17), EcoLur Informational NGO held an awareness-raising meeting in Sevan Municipality.
Lake Sevan is one of the key biodiversity hubs in Armenia, hosting valuable ecosystems and endemic species. It provides habitat for numerous species. Lake Sevan is one of the most important freshwater ecosystems in the Caucasus and a strategic freshwater resource. Its conservation is important not only for Armenia’s biodiversity but also for biodiversity in the region.
Deputy President of EcoLur Informational NGO Victoria Burnazyan presented the main objectives of COP17, the targets of Armenia’s National Biodiversity Conservation Programme, and the significance of Sevan’s natural environment in achieving these targets, as well as biodiversity conservation challenges and recommendations. Opportunities for local residents to participate in COP17 were also discussed.
The meeting was organized by EcoLur Informational NGO within the framework of "Supporting Armenia's CBD COP Presidency and Domestic Implementation” project implemented in cooperation with the Fridtjof Nansen Institute and with the support of the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation.
