The residents of the littoral area of the Getik River, Gegharkounik Region, are afraid that they will get deprived of water and land areas due to SHPs. The operating “Getik-1” SHP has already caused losses to the local residents, forests, landscape and biodiversity. Nevertheless, nobody has still received any compensation. The second SHP is constructed on the river 500-600 m far away.

“Areguni” NGO Chairman, local resident Gayane Khachatryan said, “In the winter we noticed that the soil even in the forest undergoes degradation. When there are leaves on trees it’s hard to notice, but rather noticeable in winter. Landslip processes are in progress. And we understand that modifications take place…While there is hearsay that other SHPs will also be constructed, besides these ones. Can you image 6 SHPs on one river…?”

Martuni villager: “It turns out that our communities – Getik and Martuni, just won’t have any water. Three brooks flow into the Getik River, but none of these three communities can see this water… We can see what kind of damage is caused even to animals that go down the mountain to drink water…

Gayane Khachatryan: “The constructed had been started, then we were told it is a SHP”.

Local residents: “Who asks our opinion? If there is patronage, nobody can say a word against these patrons…”

Gayane Khachatryan: “Sure the owners have good profit. I made some enquiries, even in the most arid days their profit is at least one million AMD per day, but no expenses. But what do people get? Nothing, village heads were so short-sighted that they didn’t ask how the communities would benefit…Nothing, except a symbolic rental fee…”
