In Parliament Water Committee Chair Announced Need to Draw Additional 70 Million Cubic Meters of Water from Lake Sevan

Approximately 70 million cubic meters of additional water will be needed from Lake Sevan, as, Water Committee Chair of RA Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure RA Vahagn Gevorgyan said at the joint session of Standing Committee on Finance and Budget, Territorial Management, Local Self-Government, Agriculture and Environmental Protection and Standing Committee on Economic Affairs of the National Assembly held on May 18, 2023.

"Last year, we took 165 million cubic meters of water from Sevan, and we supplied about 170 million cubic meters through Arpa-Sevan tunnel. As of now, the negative balance of Sevan is -15 centimeters. Compared to the same day last year, the Hrazdan River had a water flow of 26-27 cubic meters per second, and today it has a water flow of 8-9 cubic meters per second. One of the solutions is that approximately 70 million cubic meters of additional water will be needed from Sevan," Vahagn Gevorgyan said.

According to Vahagn Gevorgyan, the reservoirs of Armenia are also short of water this year. "We studied the analysis of five large reservoirs for 2018-2023 and recorded a negative deviation of reservoir filling. Accumulation of 520-560 million cubic meters of water was predicted in reservoirs, but as of May 17, 2023, the volume of water accumulated in these reservoirs makes up about 363 million," he said.
