Monitoring of underground waters has been carried out in Armavir and Ararat Regions of Armenia and exhaustion of underground water resources and change in qualuty are observed. This is what the final certificate of Nature Protection Ministry for the activities of 2012 says. Reminder: still in 2011 Ruben Yadoyan, PhD in Geological Sciences, beat an alarm about the deterioration of water quality in Ararat Valley.
"It's not permissible to pump water in Ararat Valley with a powerful pump. There are three layers of water, the surface layer is freshwater, but not drinkable. The lower two layers are drinking waters, but in case of pumping they will get mixed and it won't be possible to recover them. Besides. there are always mineral waters under Ararat Valley, and if you go lower, you will get to the mineral water, get mixed it with freshwater and spoil it," says Ruben Yadoyan.
As of 2011, 234 fish farms operate in Ararat Valley, which totally develop about 450 wells. According to the calculations of the specialists, fish farms only annually consume 800 million square meters of water. It's still unclear, in which condition the water resources of Ararat Valley are. Nature Protection Ministry has applied to "Clean Energy and Water" program implemented by the UNDP in Armenia, in the frames of which the preparatory part of underground water resources assessment in Ararat Valley has launched.
