Beaches Seized Even in Ureki

“Support Ureki Residents”, “Let’s Create Love and Not Walls”, “Walls Won’t Part Us” – posters with these slogans were displayed in Ureki Village (Georgia) on 1 July at the international protest demonstration in the support of Ureki locals’ rights. The protest demonstration was organized by the Georgian Young Greens orgnization with the participation of the representatives of young activists from Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Serbia.
The residents oppose to the fact that 3 ha of beaches in Ureki has been fenced with stone illegally, which doesn’t allow the residents and holiday makers to use these beaches for rest.
“We oppose to this illegal construction. Somebody intends to construct objects there or cafes, but the law doesn’t permit to sell state land areas to private people. Under all parameters, this is a public beach,” Tengo Urtsia, the representative of the Youth Movement, told EcoLur.
“For several years we have been holding protest demonstrations, but they don’t hear our voices,” the residents said. Lela Kiknadze, Greens Party of Georgia, said, “For many years people come to these beaches and get healed, as the sand here is said to heal. They cure rheumatism, paralysis, backbone diseases and skin diseases.”
Young Greens of Georgia organization member Georgi Meghreshvili gave special attention to this protest demonstration, as the locals have been supported by activists from several countries, who have joined for the sake of a good objective.
