Activist to Policeman : “Why Are You Arresting?”

On 30 October environmental activists Gevorg Safaryan and Taron Sargsyan were detained by the police during the peaceful demonstration near the governmental building. They were seeking to voice the open letter addressed to PM Tigran Sargsyan in regard with Teghut mine development by Teghut CJSC. The police prohibited him to read the letter with a loud speaker and explained that it would disturb the work of the government. When the activists tried not to obey them and to read the letter, they were immediately detained. “I consider your demand to detain us illegal,” Gevorg Safaryan said. “We consider it wrong,” a policeman said… “Why are you arresting us?” Gevorg Safaryan asked… “Don’t think something else, we won’t do something bad,” the policeman said.

“Gevorg Safaryan was detained during a peaceful demonstration for the realization of freedom of speech, when no public order was broken. He was detained only for the circumstance, when a person is trying to open the text of the open letter addressed to Armenian PM. Taron Sargsyan was detained, as he was defending his right to property in regard with the loud speaker,” the initiative speaker said.
