RA Environment Ministry proposes to punish those who burn waste with high fines. According to the Ministry's draft law "On Making Amendment to Code of Administrative Offences”, first a warning, then a fine of 50,000 AMD for RA citizens and 200,000 for officials is envisaged.
This is the case if the waste from production, consumption, or disposal is burned down in the natural environment, in the residential settlements, in their vicinity, in the boilers, furnaces or other devices not intended for their incineration. If the waste of production and consumption is burnt in the landfills, in specially allocated places or in unlicensed landfills, the citizens will be fined 100,000 drams, and the officials will be fined in the amount of 400,000 drams. If the violations are repeated, the fines will be doubled.
Knarik Grigoryan, an expert at the Armenian Women for Health and Healthy Environment NGO, believes that legal regulation alone cannot solve the problem. In her interview with EcoLur, she noted that in order to make the law practical and substantiated, it is necessary to take awareness measures for citizens in parallel.
