There are not many trash cans for sorting garbage in Yerevan. The number of colored trash cans installed at around 138 addresses of the administrative districts of the capital has not increased for a year and a half, and as we found out during our filming, you can also find household waste in the trash cans installed.
This proves that the culture of garbage sorting among citizens is not yet fully formed. "Greening and Environmental Protection" JSC cooperates with "Saranist", "ArmPlast", "Paper Trading" and "Tehil" companies, which won the competition and deal with waste processing, to which glass, plastic and cardboard waste are handed over, respectively. From January 1 to August 20, 37,000 kilograms of glass, 26,300 kilograms of plastic and about 370,000 kilograms of cardboard waste were transferred to these companies.
Inga Zarafyan, President of "Ecolur" Informational NGO, refers to the installed waste bins and concludes that cardboard and plastic waste bins were installed in Yerevan only because there were recycling companies. And in general, according to Zarafyan, the problem of garbage sorting should not be separated from the problem of garbage utilization, processing and so-called solid household waste.
Meanwhile, Inga Zarafyan claims that there is no waste sorting policy in Armenia in general. However, according to Zarafyan, as long as there is no enterprise processing medical or hazardous waste, it will end up in general garbage with all the dangerous consequences. The person in charge of the environmental protection organization also emphasizes the sorting and processing of e-waste, which is not being done in Armenia either.
