Between 2000 and 2019, greenhouse gas emissions increased by 79.9 percent. However, compared to 1990, greenhouse gas emissions are lower by about 57 percent, as the draft report of the national cadastre of greenhouse gases of RA says.
The majority of emissions, 64 percent, originate from the energy sector. Next comes agriculture, forestry and other land use at 18.8 percent, followed by industrial processes and product use at 11.5 percent and waste at 5.6 percent.
According to the document, the most significant of greenhouse gases in Armenia is carbon dioxide (CO2) at about 56 percent, followed by methane at 24.2 percent, the share of nitrogen suboxide and fluorocarbons at 11.4 percent and 8.7 percent, respectively.
The majority of CO2 emissions, around 95 percent, come from the energy sector, mainly due to emissions from thermal power plants, road transport and housing sub-categories.
The draft of "National Cadastre Report of RA Greenhouse Gas Emissions for 1990-2019" was compiled under the coordination of RA Environment Ministry with the financial support of the Global Ecological Fund and the support of the United Nations Development Program within the framework of "Building the National Transparency Framework of Armenia under the Paris Agreement" (CBIT) project.
