Landfill Site on Promenade: How to Solve Problem of Waste in Hargartsin

Hagartsin Monastery Complex built in the 10th-13th centuries is located 18 km from the famous tourist and resort town of Dilijan, in the village of Hagartsin. The village is surrounded by forests, and Haghartsi and Mets Aghbyur rivers flow on both sides of the monastery.

The flow of tourists to the Haghartsin monastery complex is constant.

Dilijan community landfill site is located in Haghartsin, which occupies an area of 32.77 hectares.

Annually, 17,733 cubic meters of household waste is accumulated in the landfill site, which is transported from the settlements of Dilijan, Haghartsin, Khachratsin, Teghut, Aghavnavank, Gosh, Hovk. The landfill site has no fence, no guard post. There are many incinerators in the landfill.

The Aghstev river is also polluted with household waste, production and domestic runoff, so its flow has decreased due to the lack of water.

EcoLur experts developed "Problems and proposed measures of energy and climate resistance policy implementation in Dilijan community, Tavush Region, Armenia" module.

Recommendations have been developed in the module to solve the problem of solid household waste. In particular, it is necessary to create a new legal and manageable landfill in the community, and recultivate the existing landfill. Besides that, it is necessary to develop a landfill management action plan, which will also include the calculation of greenhouse gas emissions, waste sorting and processing. Here, it is necessary to restore the wastewater treatment plant to exclude the pollution of the Aghstev River.
