Arman Tatoyan: Over 5 Years Azerbaijani Soldiers Changed Zvaraget Riverbed

For more than 5 years, the Azerbaijani servicemen have changed the course of the Zvaraget tributary of the Meghri River, it no longer joins the Meghri River, as RA Human Rights Defender (Ombudsman) Arman Tatoyan said during the press conference held on July 13, 2021.

The issue was raised as a result of fact-finding work carried out by the Human Rights Defender. "The Zvaraget tributary is formed as a result of snowmelt and has always joined the Meghri River after August. Until June-July, the Meghri River was sufficient for irrigation and drinking water, then it continued with the Zvaraget tributary. The Azerbaijanis have intentionally changed the course of the Zvaraget tributary. That is why, since August, there have been serious problems with water access in the villages of Nrnadzor, Shvanidzor and Alvank in the enlarged community of Meghri,” the ombudsman said.

Arman Tatoyan also touched upon the issue of Sev Lake. "Azerbaijani armed forces have invaded the Nagorno-Karabakh region and continue to violate the rights of Armenian citizens with their criminal presence. These water resources are under the control of the Azerbaijani armed forces," he said, adding that Armenia has ample opportunities to raise these issues in the UN, the Council of Europe and other international organizations.
