Government to Re-equip Worn-out Hydraulic Units in Arpa-Sevan Tunnel

In order to transfer the maximum amount of water to Lake Sevan through Arpa-Sevan tunnel, the Armenian government will upgrade and modernize the tunnel hydraulic units in order to gradually raise the level of Lake Sevan. The relevant decision was reached by the executive on March 10 in a non-reportable manner. The author of the project is the Water Committee of Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure. It’s about the water-metering points in Kechut reservoir, Yeghegis hydroelectric dams, Arpa-Sevan tunnel exit points.

According to the substantiation of the decision, the mentioned units have been operated since the first day of tunnel and did not undergo any capital repair. As a result of the studies, it turned out that the concrete walls of Yeghegis canal connecting Arpa-Sevan No. 1 and No. 2 tunnels are ruined, the canal is not suitable for transporting the maximum amount of water through the tunnel," the project rationale says.

With the adoption of the project, it is expected to ensure uninterrupted operation of Arpa-Sevan tunnel, installation of water-metering equipment, ensuring irrigation in the lands of the communities under the control of the irrigation systems of Sevan-Hrazdan basin, and saving the waters of Lake Sevan.

It should be noted that Arpa-Sevan tunnel was built in 1963-1981 to transfer the waters of Arpa and Yeghegis rivers to Lake Sevan. The total length of the tunnel constitutes 48.3 km
