Whether Water Taken from Lake Sevan for Irrigation Isn't Dangerous for Plants and People? Whether It Is Ok to Swim in Sevan

Parallel to the sharp rise in temperature, Lake Sevan has bloomed again these days. In recent days, there have been alarms about blooming phenomena in different parts of the lake.

Blue-green algae, especially the anabena variety, are dangerous because they release the toxin microcystin. And that substance is quite dangerous for both swimmers and animals. According to experts, a number of factors contributed to the growth of blue-green algae.

Environmentalist Inga Zarafyan told Lragir.am that in this situation the government should take urgent steps that are not visible. We do not see that concern about Sevan either from the government or the ministry. If you say that Sevan is your strategic water object, you should have an appropriate attitude towards that water object," Inga Zarafyan outlined.

"Based on the latest photos taken from space, we can say that this year the blue-green algae are occupying a lot of space, which means that we have a rapid reproduction, that is, the polluted area of the lake has increased quite a bit. This proves that we have a continuous process of pollution, and, despite the recommendations, steps are not being taken against this pollution," she added.
