In Armenia, Drinking Water Losses Exceed 70 Percent, Irrigation Water Losses Exceed 20 Percent

Water losses in the water balance of the French "Veolia Water" CJSC, a supplier of drinking water in Armenia, exceed 70 percent. According to the activity reports of the RA Public Services Regulatory Commission for 2019-2022. drinking water losses decreased by only 5% from 76% to 71%.  Water losses in the irrigation system reach about 20 percent. Over the last 2 years, losses in the irrigation system have decreased by 2 percent.

It should be noted that Armenia's water resources are vulnerable to climate change. The demand for water in our country remains unsatisfied. The main reservoirs are half full, Lake Sevan, a strategic reserve of freshwater, records a negative balance year after year, sources of drinking water are drying up. In the Ararat artesian basin, the water horizons have gone down, the processes of desertification have deepened. Such water losses are unacceptable under these conditions.
