Lake Sevan To Meet 2024 with Negative Balance

Lake Sevan has been recording a negative balance for several years.

As of December 27, 2023, the level of the lake is 1900.17 m, which is 12 cm lower than the level of the same day last year (1900.29 m). This index was 15 cm lower than the index of the same day last year, 1900.44 m.

Additional water intakes from Lake Sevan, together with other factors, affect the decrease in the level of Lake Sevan. Since 2008, additional water has been taken from Lake Sevan 7 times. Except for 2008, the lake had a negative balance in all other years of additional water intake.

Thus, the RA government is not able to ensure the result provided by the law "ON APPROVAL OF ANNUAL AND COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAMS OF RECOVERY, PRESERVATION, REPRODUCTION AND USE OF ECOSYSTEM OF LAKE SEVANA" to increase Lake Sevan by about 21.6 cm per year. The level of the lake decreased and approached the level of 10 years ago in 2013.

It should be noted that the amount of water entering the lake through Arpa-Sevan aqueduct is also decreasing. Since the beginning of 2023, 113.437 million cubic meters of water has flowed into the lake through Arpa-Sevan aqueduct. 162.576 million cubic meters of water flowed into the lake in 2022.

Deterioration of water quality and activation of swamping processes are observed along with the decrease of the lake level.
