Lake Sevan Day Celebrated on Last Sunday in August

Since 1999, Lake Sevan Day has been celebrated on the last Sunday of August every year. The tip of the day is the protection of Lake Sevan. Lake Sevan is a unique ecosystem, a unique source of fresh water and has a strategic importance for Armenia.

Lake Sevan has the status of a specially protected area. It is also a tourist center.

According to "Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Center" of RA Environment Ministry, the volume of Lake Sevan on August 25, 2024 makes up 38.34 billion cubic meters, 5.42 billion cubic meters more than the lowest indicator ever observed. 

The civil society keeps the problems of the lake under its attention. Among them are water intake from the lake, swamping, artificial fish farming in the lake, poaching.

The lake is exposed to the negative effects of climate change. According to forecasts, it is predicted that the river flow entering Lake Sevan will decrease by about 30-35% by 2100.

By 2030, it is planned to raise the level of the lake to 1903.5 m. According to the last data, as of August 26, the level of the lake makes up1900.63 m. Compared to the indicator of August 26, 2023, the level of the lake is higher by 22 cm.
