For centuries, Armenia has been known as Nairi, meaning “the land of fast-flowing waters.” The country is home to over 9,400 rivers and streams with a total length of about 180,000 km.
Over time, water resource consumption has increased, and climate change has further impacted water formation. Today, Armenia is considered a country facing high baseline water stress, which means that the ratio of usable water resources to water withdrawal is at a critical level.
In the past two decades, small hydropower has seen rapid development in Armenia. One by one, rivers, along with drinking and irrigation systems, have become overburdened by small hydropower plants, significantly damaging river ecosystems.
The video features discussions by representatives of local self-government bodies and experts on these and other pressing issues.
