Armenia plans to introduce a decision-support system for riverbed management and flood prevention, which will make it possible to assess flood risks, identify priority sections of riverbeds for cleaning, and plan more effectively measures aimed at water resources management and environmental protection.
According to Environment Ministry, the purpose of introducing the new system is to strengthen Armenia’s capacity to prevent potential losses caused by floods and to manage riverbeds using modern, data-driven and evidence-based methods.
The system will incorporate monitoring, hydrological and hydraulic modelling, interoperability of water-sector data, satellite observations, and advanced analytical tools. The application of these tools will make it possible to develop targeted river management measures and assess their effectiveness.
The proposed system will enable government bodies to identify priority sections of riverbeds for cleaning, forecast flood risks, assess different management scenarios, and direct public investment toward measures that will contribute to risk reduction and deliver greater environmental benefits.
The process of introducing the system and progress in developing its conceptual document were discussed during a meeting between Deputy Minister of Environment Ara Mkrtchyan and the delegation of EU4Green Recovery programme.
