Gonna Breath Stench around Country: No Funds for Cleaning Stations

Nature Protection Ministry hasn’t applied and is not going to apply any sanctions in regard with “ArmWaterSewage” CJSC, which has left cleaning stations in the country to the mercy of the fate. As a result, the water resources in Armenia get polluted, while settlements are rather stinky.

On 28 July 2011 “EcoLur” Informational NGO sent a letter to Nature Protection Ministry, which said the sewage of Hrazdan and Tsaghkadzor Towns and neighboring communities is dumped into the Hrazdan River and the sewage is accumulated in the territory of Qaghsi Village, Kotayk Region, thus becoming a source of stench. W have also written that the villagers had to irrigate their orchards with that sewage water. We asked the Ministry to reply what kind of measured were taken to make “ArmWaterSewage” CJSC perform its obligation to clean sewage water, what kind of sanctions were applied in regard with “ArmWaterSewage” CJSC.

Nature Protection Ministry Staff Head Edgar Pirumyan informed that all the sewage cleaning stations served by “ArmWaterSewage” CJSC are not operating, as their operation requires large financial investment.” Edgar Pirumyan outlined, “In accordance with Article 101 of Water Code of Armenia, irrigation of agricultural areas with sewage water is permitted as prescribed by law, and the community residents’ actions are illegal.” The Ministry more focuses on the illegal irrigation by villagers rather than on the fact that the largest water resource in Armenia, Hrazdan River, has turned into a sewage pipeline. Reminder: Kapan Town residents have sued Nature Protection Ministry and accused them of inaction in regard with irrigating the Voghji River with sewage water and industrial wastes.
