The most polluted river in Armenia is Akhtala River, more precisely the estuary of Akhtala River (where the Debed River flows into), while the most polluted river in Yerevan – Hrazdan, as Lianna Margaryan, Deputy Director of “Environmental Impact Monitoring Center” SNCO said at the meeting with journalists. “The findings of the monitoring show that the rivers in Armenia mainly have the 2nd and 3rd category of purity, there are very few rivers ore sections of rivers, which could be classified as 4th or 5th category,” stated Lianna Margaryan. What about the 1st category rivers, as a matter of fact, they don’t exist, as they are the initial part of the rivers.
Under Lianna Margaryan, the most common indicator of river pollution in Armenia is the content of ammonium. “Under the other parameters, their contents are much closer to 3rd and 4th categories, i.e. ammonium is the only element, which makes water be classified under 5th category. What about the metals, we don’t have rivers with hazardous metals in Armenia, such as lead and arsenium. The concentrations of copper and zinc are usually high in mining zones,” she said.
