For years, Yerevan has not been able to increase green areas in order to reach the goal set by the Yerevan master plan of increasing the green area per inhabitant to 17 square meters. It is still not possible to even come close to the minimum green space limit of 9 square meters per inhabitant set by the World Health Organization.
Studying the data mentioned on the official website of Yerevan Municipality and "Green City" action plan of Yerevan city, it becomes clear that the green areas have not increased since 2015. Both sources state that Yerevan's green areas are officially about 6760 ha, which is 30% of the city's total area. This includes public, private spaces and all types of green vegetation cover including flowerbeds and lawns. Out of this area, 860 hectares is public green space.
Currently, according to the official website of Yerevan Municipality, the public green area for general use is around 869 ha. In the short-term actions of "Yerevan City Green City" action plan, it is planned to develop and start implementing a long-term development plan for the revitalization of Yerevan. The goal of this project is revegetation and reforestation of Yerevan, creation of natural dust barriers, carbon sequestration and prevention of soil erosion. The program was proposed to be implemented in the phases for 2019-2022.
