In 2016, Yerevan became the first city to join the EBRD’s Green Cities programme. Since then, the city has received hundreds of millions of euros from the EBRD and other international financial institutions to address pressing issues related to air quality, green spaces, energy, transport and waste management.
In September 2023, "CEE Bankwatch Network" published a video prepared jointly with "EcoLur" Informational NGO about how the capital of Armenia meets the obligations assumed by the project and what needs to be done.
With the support of "CEE Bankwatch Network", EcoLur implemented "Be informed about plans and programs of Green cities in Yerevan and Gyumri" project, and within its framework a number of gaps were highlighted. Accordingly, over the past 5 years, the air quality in the capital has deteriorated, Yerevan resident do not have access to the minimum per capita green area defined by the World Health Organization, the Nubarashen landfill does not meet international standards for sanitary waste facilities and poses safety and health risks to Yerevan residents.
Revisions to Yerevan’s Green City Action Plan and the city’s EBRD-funded solid waste project are due out soon. The video call on Yerevan residents to be ready to share their feedback so that their needs are addressed!
