Teghout Support Initiative has addressed an open letter to Gndevaz, Gorayq and Saravan communities in Vayots Dzor Region as represented by community heads Harapet Mkrtchayn, Arustam Arustamyan and Simon Babayan.
The letter says, “WE ARE WILLING TO SUPPORT ALTERNATIVE ECONOMY DEVELOPMENT”
Dear residents of Gndevaz, Gorayq and Saravan communities
Your communities are facing another non-realistic mining project, which violates the environmental legislation. You should have been informed about the disastrous consequences of Amulsar gold mining. If the government and Geoteam company hasn’t informed you about the adversary effects of the Amulsar mining on your community property and private property, your health, economic activity, environment, the most important water resources of Armenia – Lake Sevan and Vorotan River basin.
If you are aware of this enormous damage, you will definitely turn down this project in your communities.
We know that you have received attractive job offers, while your communities have current and potential huge resources to develop horticulture, husbandry, production of dairy products, tourism etc. We know that promotion to alternative economic will help the communities to realize that your interest is within long-term and environmentally friendly programs and not mining.
Teghout Support civic initiative expresses its willingness to support the promotion of agroproducts and possible touristic services in your communities. We have organized the fair of honey in Teghout and Shnogh villages and we are seeking to promote alternative business and we are willing to promote the development of alternative economy with innovative approaches.
We are calling not to allow the Amulsar gold mining in your communities and to think of making your communities into centers for clean and non-contaminated agroproducts. We are ready to organize a fair of apricot and apricot-made products in Gndevaz community next summer.
Mining and healthy environment are incompatible, especially in case of Amulsar project, when open pit mining and the construction of a heap leach facility will poison the water resources and land areas not only in your communities, but also in Vayots Dzor, Syunik and Gegharkounik Regions.
Our willingness is honest and we are looking forward to your response.”
