With 65 votes in favor, Armenia was selected as the host country for COP17 during COP16, which took place in Cali, Colombia, on October 31. The 17th Conference will be held in Yerevan in 2026. The Armenian delegation at COP16 was headed by the President of Armenia, Vahagn Khachaturyan.

“On October 31, during the ongoing 16th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, Armenia was elected as the host country of the 17th meeting. This election reaffirms the growing confidence of the international community in Armenia as an important stakeholder in global environmental processes. Armenia is entrusted with the responsible mission of consolidating and promoting international efforts under the Convention on Biodiversity to address the current environmental challenges faced by humanity,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia noted.

“The choice was between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Armenia won with 65 out of 123 votes in a secret ballot. This was the first time in the history of the Convention on Biological Diversity that the host country of a COP was chosen through a vote,” the press release of the Ministry of Environment of Armenia stated.

The United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity is an international legally binding treaty that addresses biodiversity at all levels: ecosystem, species, and genetic resources. The Conference of the Parties to the Convention is held every two years.
