April 1 is observed as International Bird Day. Birds play an important role in ecosystems, and their protection is a key component of biodiversity conservation. Birds also serve as indicators of environmental health. A decline in bird populations often signals environmental problems such as pollution, climate change, and habitat destruction.
The causes of bird decline include poaching, reduction of forest areas, depletion of food resources, drying of lakes, urbanization, and environmental pollution.
More than 350 bird species are found in Armenia. Various factors affect bird populations, and 96 species are red-listed in Armenia.
