Nearly AMD 27 Million in Damage to Water Resources Recorded at “Shaqi” Small Hydropower Plant

Violations of water use permit requirements have been identified at “Shaqi” small hydropower plant (SHPP) operating in Shaqi village, Syunik Region.

The Environmental Protection and Mining Inspection Body launched an inspection following reports about a decrease in the water flow of the Shaqi waterfall, according to an official statement by the agency.

As a result of the inspection, officials found that  “Shaqi” SHPP, operated by “HAKOBJANYAN AND GALSTYAN HPP” LLC, had been functioning in violation of the conditions set by its water use permit.

In particular, the company was found to have exceeded the permitted water abstraction limits by withdrawing an additional 13,538,687 cubic meters of water from the Shaqi River. Inspectors also recorded violations related to monthly abstraction limits, as well as the permitted periods and operational regime of water use.

An assessment of the environmental impact of the company’s economic activity on water resources was subsequently conducted. The calculated environmental damage amounts to approximately AMD 27,077,374.

Administrative liability measures are expected to be imposed on the company’s director.
