Yerevan Environmental Projects under Microscope: Discussion of State and Public Sector Representatives at Ecolur Press Club

“Yerevan Green City Action Plan” (Yerevan GCAP) was discussed at “EcoLur” Press Club as presented by Mary Harutyunyan, Deputy Director of "Yerevan Urban Development Investment Programs Implementation Agency" CNPO.

Sirarpi Haykazyan, Acting Head, and Gorik Avetisyan, Deputy Head of the Environmental Protection Department of Yerevan Municipality, Astghine Pasoyan - Director of Energy Saving Foundation as well as Coordinator of the national team of “Yerevan Green City Action Plan”, Dshkhuhi Sahakyan  - Expert on Biodiversity, Ecosystems and Land Use of Caucasus Regional Environmental Center Armenia and Green City Action Plan, Hasmik Khurshudyan, Expert at Yerevan Municipality "Greening and Environmental Protection" JSC and soil scientist Mary Hokhanyan, Chief Engineer at "Yerevan Bus" CJSC Vardges Papyan, Executive Director of "Transparency International Anti-Corruption Center" Sona Ayvazyan and Project Manager Aren Manukyan, President of "Armenian Women for Health and Healthy Environment" NGO Elena Manvelyan and Assistant to the President Gohar Khojayan, President of "Khazer" Ecological and Cultural NGO Amalia Hambardzumyan, Coordinator of Yerevan's Aarhus Center Silva Ayvazyan, “Forests of Armenia” NGO Director Nazeli Vardanyan, "Green Armenia" NGO President Tehmine Yenoqyan, and EcoLur’s team took part in this discussion.

In her speech, Mary Harutyunyan mentioned the works carried out by Yerevan GCAP in the fields of energy management, seismic retrofitting of public buildings, creation of new green areas, transport, reduction of air pollution, environmental protection and awareness raising.

“Thus, during 2022-2023, the green spaces in Yerevan increased by 35 hectares. The green spaces in the downtown and Arabkir administrative districts have been mapped and inventoried, and the works in other administrative districts are ongoing. The air quality monitoring system has also been improved in the capital,” Mary Harutyunyan noted.
The discussion was held within the framework of “Civil Society Becomes an Active Participant in the Greening of Yerevan” project, implemented by “EcoLur” Informational NGO in partnership with Yerevan Municipality with the support of “People Powered - Global Hub for Participatory Democracy”.

Our goal is to understand how we can jointly solve Yerevan's environmental problems, what needs to be done so that Yerevan becomes a green city," Inga Zarafyan, President of "Ecolur" Informational NGO outlined.

"The main goal is to create a stable link of dialogue between the community and political society. We hope that with our memorandum of cooperation we will be able to lay those foundations", Mary Harutyunyan noted.

The outcomes and recommendations of the round tables will be published on www.ecolur.org website and on the Facebook page of Yerevan Municipality.
The topics of the round tables are related to Yerevan Green City Action Plan, needs of the capital as a climate vulnerable area, waste management issues, green energy, green spaces, air pollution and transport.
