Plan to Build New Landfill Site in Nubarashen Canceled; New Plan Being Discussed with World Bank

"Yerevan's Solid Domestic Waste Management Plan" for the closedown of the existing Nubarashen landfill site and the construction of a new landfill site in accordance with international standards in the adjacent area has been canceled, as Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan said this while responding to Ecolur's question during the press conference held in the municipality.

"If a project is not implemented for 10 years, it is no longer an implemented project," Tigran Avinyan noted.

The implementation of the solid domestic waste management project in Yerevan was estimated at 26 million Euros, out of which 8 million Euros were to be provided in the form of a loan by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the European Investment Bank, 8 million Euros in the form of a grant by the European Union and 2 million Euros in the form of a grant from of Environmental Partnership Fund. "Those financial means are not available," Tigran Avinyan said.

According to the mayor, implementation of a new project is being discussed with the World Bank. "I suggested that we go with a more pragmatic approach. Will the Erebuni landfill site project be implemented? Yes, it will be implemented for sure. The World Bank has conducted a relevant study. It is better to spend a little more time on the design, which the World Bank has already done, spent that time, got all the starting points, and most likely it is with the partners of the World Bank that we will implement this program in the next 3-4 years.
