How Does Climate Change Affect Foragers? Course for Tavish Region Residents

What are the environmental and production significance of natural pastures, how does climate change affect the condition of pastures, what are the challenges of natural resource management: these and other similar issues were discussed on March 14, 2024, at Yenoqavan settlement, Tavush Region, during a course organized within the framework of “Living Landscapes for Market Development in Armenia” (LILA) project. Representatives of local government and public organizations of Tavush Region, residents of beneficiary villages participated in the training.

"Proper management is important for the preservation of natural resources. It takes more than a century for 1 cm of soil to form naturally, and to decommission 1 cm of soil is a matter of minutes. The pasture should be used correctly to create favorable conditions for the life activity of plants and microorganisms," noted Gagik Tovmasyan, Head of Department of Crop Production and Soil Science of National Agrarian University of Armenia. He emphasized not only the production but also the environmental significance of natural fodder.

Referring to the impact of climate change on agriculture, Mr. Tovmasyan noted, "Climate change is a stress for agriculture. Due to reduced rainfall and rising temperatures, soil moisture has decreased and irrigated agriculture is less available," he mentioned.

"Living Landscapes for Market Development in Armenia" project is funded by the Swiss government through the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). It is implemented by WWF Armenia together with “Strategic Development Agency” NGO in partnership with “EcoLur” Informational NGO.
