The Aghstev river, overflowing from heavy rains, continues to cause damage to the settlements in Tavush. On July 28, the flooded river damaged the bridge leading to Khashtarak village, which has beenbuilt recently. The rescuers evacuated 55 citizens trapped in the "Heqiat" camp near Khashtarak village.
Before that, Dilijan Town and Haghartsin Village, affected by the flood in May, were recognized as a disaster zone by the decision of the Armenian government. Shavarsh Grigoryan, assistant to Administrative Head of Haghartsin, mentioned his interview with Ecolur what damages the village suffered due to the flood. "The river swept away three flats along with the soil, tore 3-4 sections from the road, damaged crops, swept away livestock," he said. According to him, 25 families contacted them saying they suffered damage.
According to Shavarsh Grigoryan, the collapsed part of the road was reinforced with stones as a temporary solution in the Dilijan-Ijevan section of the M-4 interstate road, in the area of Haghartsin village. "We brought stones from Road Construction Company and filled them so that the road would not be further destroyed," he said.
Agstev washed away large layers of soil. The river has changed its course and now, according to Hagartsin residents, flows through the plots near their houses.
According to the residents, as a result of the big landslide that happened in 2006, the river had already changed its course once, this is already the second case.
According to the residents, the riverbed should be cleaned regularly to avoid disasters in the future.
In Dilijan, the heavy rains in May and the following ones damaged the property of the residents, the water flooded the basements and shops.
The heavy rains that fell in July brought sewage and filled the residents' yards. According to residents, the situation created in the town is also the result of a blocked, non-functioning drainage system. "There is a need to change the drainage system, because of that my house is flooded with tons of water... A few days ago there was a strong flood, the mudslide brought stones, sand and silt and filled my garage," the residents told EcoLur.
Local residents associate these weather anomalies with climate change.
Albert Haroyan, President of “Ecopolicy” Environmental Center for Secure and Developed Community” said his interview with Ecolur. "Most of the time, the lines called ecotones are not preserved, where the river should have a certain demarcation in its width and length, and economic activities should not be allowed, because from time to time the rivers may go out of their beds.
According to Albert Haroyan, the floodgates and drainage system inherited from the Soviet Union should be reviewed and designed and built in accordance with other standards.
