Roundtable Ahead COP 29

This year, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change ("COP29") will be held on November 11-22 in Baku. Holding this internationalmeeting in a country that violates human rights has caused great indignation. Many human rights organizations and environmental organizations and movements have issued calls to cancel or boycott the decision to hold COP 29 in Baku.

On October 17, 2024, "Ahead of COP 29" roundtable was held in Yerevan.  The aim was to present the position of the civil society of Armenia regarding COP 29 and to hear the official position of Armenia regarding the participation of Armenia and the climate agenda of Armenia within the framework of the COP.

The round table was organized with the support of Heinrich Boell Foundation Yerevan Office – South Caucasus Region within the framework of "Strengthening communities in the implementation of climate policy in Armenia through participation and awareness" project implemented by EcoLur Informational NGO.

The discussion was attended by the representatives of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, the South Caucasus Office of the Heinrich Böll Foundation, the UNDP climate project team, the non-governmental organizations included in the Armenian national platform of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum, the representatives of Armenian civil society, "EcoLur" Informational NGO, local self-government bodies and local NGOs from Martuni, Pambak, Gavar and Hrazdan communities.

Sonya Schiffers, Director of Heinrich Boell Foundation Yerevan Office – South Caucasus Region, welcomed the participants of the round table. Victoria Burnazyan, Deputy President of "EcoLur" Informational NGO, and Roza Julhakyan, the expert, presented the analysis prepared for COP29.

Aram Gabrielyan, Expert of "Khazer" NGO, made a report on "Long-term financing and /international cooperation mechanisms for solving climate change problems". Diana Harutyunyan, Senior Adviser of the UN climate programs, presented how the UN Development Program supports the implementation of the RA climate agenda, which was followed by the speeches of the participants.

At the end of the discussion, the participants were presented with the draft of the statement of the Armenian civil society organizations to the participants of the UN COP29 session, which will be publicized after the review.
